Do Teachers Remain Neutral or Share their Beliefs with Students?
With the upcoming elections near, this article seemed like a timely piece for all of us as educators. "...How does language change the course of our relationships with teens and build a culture of mutual respect? Holloman and Yates discovered eleven categories of words that foster respect. They found that rephrasing words from a negative to a positive context helps develop a culture of respect. The eleven categories are listed below, with word samples for each. ..." Thank you to Cathy White for offering this article. It is important that we model this respect of course, and in turn set the expectations from our students. Kevin Quinn and I often emphasize this in our student dealings as a way of grounding student concerns. At times students, and families, may not view a situation through multiple perspectives of respect, and when directed in this manner can better appreciate the ramifications of their actions. In addition, students value being treated with respect when they are facing consequences, and this approach invests in long-term positive relationships.
